The book consists of nine chapters covering little known raids of the Civil War that are not well documented in other histories that include these key operations as tactics in major campaigns. One winter raid by Union cavalry crossed the entire state of West Virginia successfully and was able to extract itself while under pursuit by forcing a country doctor to lead them around Confederate forces by using country roads.
Another raid became the John Wayne Movie, The Horse Soldiers.
Illustrations include paintings by Don Troiani and contemporary photographs and maps.
There is also a 16-book bibliography included as a starting point for readers interested in obtaining more information.
